Deon has a background in research, operational forestry and biology in BC. Since joining Blackwell, Deon has managed a number of research projects, including a large-scale multiphase project on post-wildfire regeneration in old growth management areas (OGMAs). He has also conducted several literature reviews, including a recent review examining the effectiveness of green fuel breaks for the National Research Council (NRC). Additionally, Deon has contributed to complex municipal projects, such as the development of a forest resilience plan for the District of North Vancouver and a post-wildfire rehabilitation plan for Metro Vancouver. Further, in the area of urban forestry, he has completed field assessments and reporting to ensure compliance of new development with wildfire hazard and natural areas development permit area requirements. Deon has also worked on First Nations Specific Claims cases, helping to develop field investigation and reporting techniques for claim verification. Deon has a wide variety of resource sector experience, including fish population sampling, fish stream classification, road and cut block layout, silviculture surveying and hydro reservoir vegetation monitoring. Deon has training in ecological classification, forest fuel sampling, Riparian Area Regulation assessment, and forest health aerial overview surveying.
